1938: Carson City Gets A Rotary Club

Two men- one imbued with the spirit of Rotary and cognizant of its multiple benefits; the other an eager listener- are responsible for the formation of the Carson City Rotary Club.

To Hans Jepson, president of the Minden Rotary club belongs the distinction of being the one who saw the vast possibilities in Carson City for the organization of rotary. His "partner" in the preliminary discussions was the Rev. John L. Harvey, prominent Carson clergyman and one of the city's most civic minded citizens.

Mr. Jepson and Mr. Harvey saw their conversations during the summer of 1937 grow into realities as the idea began to crystallize. They worked quietly, untiringly, for many months and, in January of the next year, realized that a Rotary Club in Carson City was only a matter of weeks.

The first meeting to outline plans for organization was held at Mr. Harvey's home, with five persons in attendance. Out of that meeting came suggestions which were lead to the addition of the newest Rotary Club to the Nevada roster. Painstaking care was exercised in the choice of prospective members and numerous interviews were held.

Finally, on January 25 the first regular meeting was held and the entire membership form Minden, the sponsor club, was on hand to give a warm welcome to their prospective brothers in Rotary.

One month later came word from Chicago that the Carson club had been officially accepted as a member of Rotary International- an announcement that spelled success to several months of earnest effort on the part of the pioneers in the local movement.

Twenty-five men comprise the charter roll of the Carson City Rotary Club-twenty-five men who were ever mindful of the organizations ideal of "He Profits Most Who Serves Best."
